EVENT: FACEBOOK LIVE

The Facebook live event was held  on 13 November 2020, from 8 pm to 9pm. We had invited two speakers, which is Ms Sim Wen Yee, a Partner from Messrs Sim & Rahman and Dr. Fauziah Binti Mohd Noor, a Senior Lecturer from School of Islamic Business, UUM to shared their knowledges and opinions on the topic of "Rights of Adopted Children to Inheritance" from both Civil law and Islamic law perspective.

 

However, when the live broadcast was halfway through, we encountered technical problems, and the live broadcast was forced to interrupt. Hence, we only managed to retrieve back the recording of second half session of the live broadcast. Up to 23 November 2020, the total view of the recording live session has reached 1.3K.

The following is the tentative of the live event:

8.00pm - 8.05pm: Welcoming Remark

8.05pm - 8.45pm: Interview Session

8.45pm - 8.55pm: Q&A Session

8.55pm - 9.00pm: Closing

List of questions for interview session:

  1. Does the adopted child have an automatic right to inherit the property of the adoptive parents just like a biological son or daughter?

  2. Registration of Adoption Act 1952 does not confer adopted child an automatic right to inheritance, in your opinion, why do people still opt to register adoption under this act?

  3. Can the Muslim adoptive parent(s) pass the property to the adopted children through hibah or waqf?

  4. In the event that the term 'children' appears in the will/ wasiat of the adoptive parents, would it be interpreted as including the adopted child in the distribution of the estates of the deceased?

  5. Does the adoptive relationship extinguish the rights of inheritance of the adopted child to the estate of their biological parents?

  6. If the adoptive parent(s) died before the adoption is finalized, does the child still have a right for inheritance of property? Should the child be given the inheritance rights?

  7. What is your response towards the view that says a denial of the adoptive children’s automatic right to inheritance amounts to injustice?

  8. Which is the most preferable method, litigation, or alternative dispute resolution to settle family disputes concerning inheritance?

  9. How can we best protect the inheritance rights of an adopted child? Do you think the current law is sufficient enough to protect the rights of adopted children?

  10. Is there any takeaway message that you would like to share with our audiences?
